Catch the squirrel in you!

November 15, 2010

Wise men advice – to be effective, be simple – just do what you do! Eat when you eat, walk when you walk, talk when you talk, think when you think. Just do what you do!

It’s not that we always do. Not quite. Mostly never! Especially in the current generation of open distraction – self created and surrounded! In effect – we hardly are where we are, what we are! Blame it on multi-tasking, power of technology or lack of control!

We are expert at being where we are not, doing something while thinking something. Though we love reality, often find the daydreams sweeter. That’s because – We have squirrels – within us!

Squirrels are wonderful – small, beautiful and dynamic mammals around.Sciurus_niger_%28on_fence%29[1] It turns out that they are smarter and sneakier than anyone ever thought!

Those within us – always keep moving, keep shifting, keep jumping up and down as do those squirrels that own the garden around our house!

Peeping through the window, making it their hideout, playing with each other in endless merry-go-round, running everywhere including the road – in their usual wayward manner and zig-zag course with sudden turnabouts and back-jumps between speeding wheels and roaring engines!

Never steady, never in one place, never at rest!

Only death brings the squirrel to halt! Sad but true!

Being fair, focused and firm – ensures effectiveness in the crowd. Good to be a dreamer doer than a day dreamer!

Before it is too late, it is important to catch the squirrel(s) within you!

Power of non-conformance!

November 9, 2010

We conform to common usage because we find it convenient and safe. Once we have conformed, we like those who come after us to conform to it too, so that we can continue to feel comfortable and safe in their company!

Follow the current, do as all do and think what all think. Be one with the crowd, and you will see what the crowd sees and reach where the crowd reaches. This is good enough for most people in easy acquiescence, but will leave unsatisfied the eyes that can see more and the feet that are eager to walk farther.

Most people’s journey through life is a conducted tour! They look where they are told to look and they see what they are told to see. They go where they are taken and they stay there while they are kept there. Willful obedience to a pre-arranged & time tested routine. Follow your guide and you will be safe. Look at his little flag and you will not be lost…Never mind if you miss the thrill of discovery and the personal experience of the wonder of life. You will be safely back at scheduled place on the scheduled time!Mount_Kenya_guides[1]

Convenient, no doubt. Prepaid, programmed, guaranteed. But for the same reason, uninspiring and commonplace! The picture postcard are the same for every tourist, the souvenirs cheap and repeated. However marvelous the country may be, there is hardly a knowledge of a new land, any contact with new people when one has travelled in the insured isolation of a conducted tour!

Fortunately, the door is still open and the way is cleared for those who want to explore life on their own, travel unusual paths and let themselves be surprised by the turns of the mind, the skylines of the spirit and the landscapes of the soul.

They are ready to travel alone, to risk danger and brave hardships; they love adventure and trust their heart in the bewildering maze that life on earth is. They are perpetual pioneers who, while respecting the group and recognizing the advantages of a common trip, choose for themselves the legitimate privilege of a personal search.

They like to experience the feel of new soil under bare feet, they love to breathe new air and taste new food, they welcome the gentle panic of getting lost for a while in an alien land. Tourism on a shoestring budget. Hitchhiking on the roads that lead to heaven. The days of the great explorers are not over yet!

Social Entrepreneurs are one such class of explorers – with a deep rooted passion to act as change catalysts! Bootstrapping is their business model, society is their resource pool, service is their product; sustainability and inclusive growth – their mission! They make full use of the power of non-conformance in the business world!

Interestingly, any dreamer doer in the crowd – be part of an organization as an employee or an employer can be an explorer for good! Then the boundary – the conformance setup will become organic – one that expands as the organization expands! This helps in ensuring sustainability of any organization!

good to be a fresher!

November 3, 2010

It is typical to see an over committed new product development program under tremendous pressure especially ahead of a critical customer demo! A make or break situation – ahead of once in a life time opportunity. Entire team is finding it hard to fix the problem and get it rolling… Architects are seriously debating what would have happened over night to have such a situation. Development and test teams are huddling to secretly find out that they did not cause the error. No clue, except the time is kicking .. fast!

Project Manager, without an option has called for the meeting – to find and fix the issue within no time! No solution, but only suspicion prevails. Senior members do not seem to agree that there is any way they can fix it! Junior most member of the team, a fresh grad – the configuration manager speaks out hesitantly…”Why can’t we switch back to previous stable release – for this demo?” As simple as that – going back to previously known better state is the simplest one can do – any time! if that is possible!

Keeping fresh minds at work is the simplest form of best insurance, a manager should have!

Check this one too…

A large truck was moving through a railway underpass when it got wedged in between the road and the girders overhead. All the efforts of experts to extricate it proved useless and traffic was stalled for miles on both sides of the underpass.

A little boy kept trying to get the attention of the foreman but was always pushed away. Finally, in sheer exasperation, the foreman said, "I suppose you’ve come to tell us how to do this job?"

"Yes," said the kid. "I suggest you let some air out of the tyres."

In the layman’s mind
there are many possibilities.
In the expert’s mind
there are a few!

Many a times, it is the fresh mind that brings the best value – especially in the time of crises when most of minds do not seem to work!

Being fresh at heart and mind will make us proud of whatever we do!
